ISBN or Bookland EAN bar code:

**As of January 01, 2007 all Bookland bar codes should be 13 digits in length. Please check with your issuer to ensure you have the correct ISBN type (please see our Order Form page for more details).

Bookland EAN bar codes are created from an ISBN and are used on book covers, they are sometimes referred to as ISBN bar codes. If you already have your ISBN then please continue on, if you do not have your ISBN then you will need to contact your American, Canadian or country of origin ISBN issuer. Once you have your ISBN please return so that we can create your Bookland EAN bar code image file for you.

A Bookland EAN bar code is a 13-digit code. To create a Bookland EAN from an ISBN, start with the Bookland Prefix 978 or 979. Next add the first 9 digits of the ISBN, excluding the hyphens. The remaining 13th digit is the check digit, calculated mathematically using the preceding digits. For example, ISBN '0-96-622573-2' becomes Bookland EAN '9780966225730'. Notice that the Bookland EAN check digit '0' is different from the ISBN check digit '2'.

The small five-digit add-on bar code to the right of the Bookland EAN bar code is used for encoding the currency indicator and price of a book. The five-digit add-on bar code 60495 in our example, breaks down as follows: 6 is the Canadian currency/country code and 0495 is the $4.95 price of the book. The currency/country code for the USA is 5, therefore an American five-digit add-on bar code would be 50495.

  • Books priced $99.99 or higher will have the following format: USA = 59999, CAN = 69999, etc. Unless a UPC is used, the retailer will have to manually input the price of the book.

  • When a publisher chooses to not include the price of a book the five-digit add-on bar code must be 90000 which indicates there is no information encoded on the bar code (*bookstores require this as they cannot scan the Bookland EAN bar code if the five-digit add-on bar code is missing).

  • Many non-bookstore retailers, such as department stores will not be able to scan a  Bookland EAN bar code; therefore these retailers may require that a UPC bar code also be included on the book cover (if in doubt speak to your retailer).

*All Bookland EAN bar codes must include a five-digit ad-on bar code (60495).

*How do you get your UPC number for your product:

If you already have your UPC number then please continue on. If you do not have your UPC number, please contact the Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC) to become a UCC member. Once you become a UCC member you will be able to create your own UPC numbers for your products.

UPC or EAN-13

The EAN-13 symbol is based on the UPC-A standard and was implemented by the International Article Numbering Association (EAN) in Europe. This standard was implemented because the UPC-A standard was not well designed for international use. If you are planning on marketing your product internationally you should contact the Universal Code Council for more detailed information.

UPC - A:

The UPC-A (Universal Product Code-A), bar code number is made up of a 12-digit number, for example 0-12345-12345-0.

The first digit indicates the numbering system used ('0' or '7' denotes a regular UPC-A code). The next five digits (12345) identify the manufacturer (issued to your company by the Universal Code Council); the next five digits (12345) identify the product number assigned by your company. The remaining digit (0) is the check digit, which is calculated mathematically using the preceding digits.

The UPC-A issuer will determine the type of numbering system used for your bar code. Common numbering systems are '0' & '7'.

UPC - E:

The UPC-E (Universal Product Code-E), bar code is a six-digit variation of the UPC-A bar code, normally used for smaller packages.

EAN - 13:

The EAN-13 bar code number is a superset of the UPC-A and is made up of a 13-digit number, for example 00-12345-12345-0.

The first two digits (00) identify the country and numbering system. The next five digits (12345) identify the manufacturer (issued to your company by the Universal Code Council); the next five digits (12345) identify the product number assigned by your company. The remaining digit (0) is the check digit, which is calculated mathematically using the preceding digits. Our example EAN-13 bar code is for USA and Canada (00-13).

The EAN issuer will determine the type of numbering system used for your bar code.

*If you are planning on marketing your product internationally you should contact the Universal Code Council for more detailed information regarding EAN-13.
