Tip, Trick or Secret:
|
KEEP YOUR PRIMARY
EMAIL ADDRESS TO YOURSELF:
Do not give out your primary email address to anyone.
|
SETUP YOUR EMAIL
FILTERS:
Use a
software
package with advanced junk-mail filters to keep out spam while
helping to ensure you don't lose important messages. Look for
software that offers easy-to-use, customizable settings that allow
you to choose your level of protection. We use
Spam
Inspector and find it to be very reliable.
|
USE AN EMAIL
ENCODER:
Domain Owners can use an email
encoder to hide working email addresses placed on web
sites. Email encoders hide an email address so that the spam bots
will not be able to find them.
|
USE A DISPOSABLE EMAIL
ADDRESS:
Depending on the email service that you sign up for (hotmail.com,
yahoo.com, others ...), you can filter out spam and only have the email you want to
receive forwarded by the disposable email address to your primary email address.
|
HIDE YOUR EMAIL
ADDRESS WHEN POSTING TO THE NET:
Hide your email address when posting to the Internet. For example if you want to post a question to a newsgroup modify your email address so that an email spider will not be able to use it to send you
spam! If they try to use it they will get it bounced back at them. If your email address is
jbrown@mysite.com then post your message as jbrownATmysite.com. Or better yet use a disposable email address that you can throw away!
|
CHECK WEB FORMS
CAREFULLY:
When filling out web forms make sure that you are not giving your approval to receive more information online via your email address. Typically these web forms have opt-in checkboxes that are normally checked by default.
|
DOMAIN OWNERS - USE THROWAWAY EMAIL
ADDRESSES:
Domain Owners can also makeup throwaway email addresses as often as
need be. We use this idea a lot and swear by it. For example if you
want to sign up for a newsletter to see what it's about you can make
up an email address such as newsletter@mysite.com. Then sign up for
the newsletter, if you don't like the newsletter then delete the
address. You will never see any other spam for that email address.
|
WATCH FOR EMAIL FROM
STRANGERS:
Email from strangers can be spam and potentially viruses waiting to be unleashed. If you get these in your inbox delete them right away. Never reply to
spam, even if it is to send a "remove" request. Most spammers ignore such responses, or worse, add you to their list of validated email addresses that they sell.
|
PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY:
Help protect your privacy. If you plan to
register at a web site or enter a contest, check the site's privacy
policy and terms of use statement. If the web site doesn't explain
how they use your information, reconsider registering your e-mail
address and sharing other personal information. Or better yet use a disposable email address that you can throw away!
|
NEVER BUY ANYTHING ADVERTISED IN SPAM:
Never buy anything from the spammers, eventually they will give up.
|
STAMP OUT SPAM:
Help stamp out spam by using Spam
Cop
